Passover – or Pesach in Hebrew – is a Jewish holiday celebrated in the Hebrew month of Nissan. It’s a celebration of freedom and renewal, inspired by the Israelites newfound freedom after escaping their Egyptian slavers. Like with any celebration, thortful is here to make sure you’re ready to send your joy and blessings to all your loved ones. Celebrating something else this holiday? See our guides on Eid wishes, Hannukah greetings or some lovely messages for Ramadan.
But before we go any further, why don’t you look at our selection of Passover cards; I’m sure you will find one that’ll warm your heart.
What is Passover?
Pesach means “to pass over” in Hebrew, relating to the 10 plagues God sent onto the Egyptians as punishment for not releasing the Israelites. On the final day of the plague, the horrors passed over the houses of the Jews and spared them, allowing Moses to lead his people to their freedom. They fled so quickly, in fact, the bread they were baking did not have time to rise. This is known as “matzo”, a flat cracker that symbolises the unrisen bread of the freeing Israelites. Moses led his people out of Egypt, parted the red sea in a holy spectacle, and the rest is history.
Passover in 2026 will take place from the 1st of April until the 9th of April, with the first Sedar meal (a traditional feast shared with family) taking place on the night of the 1st. It’s a time for families to spread joy and recount stories to each other, to sing songs and give readings, and to remember the brilliance of their ancestors. If you’re struggling to find ways to wish your loved ones a happy Passover, we have a perfect list for you!
